Impact of shrinking space on women organising in Jordan

This study is carried out by the Kvinna till Kvinna office in Amman and it is comprised of a survey of 22 stakeholders, 9 in-depth interviews with key informants, and a comprehensive desk review.

The report attempts to pinpoint key challenges that women human rights defenders and young feminists face in relation to the political, socio-economic, and demographic challenges in Jordan and place them within an analytical framework.

The findings are intended to strengthen the feminist approach to women organising outside the ordinary structure of women’s civil society organisations to continue to be relevant and advance gender equality agenda in Jordan. In parallel, the study also zooms in and identifies whether the civic space around women organising is restrictive and is an impediment to activism, especially by young feminists.

One of the main findings from the study is that over 90 per cent of respondents described that the civic space around their activism in Jordan is “shrinking”. When asked to identify who is responsible, the respondents almost unanimously (95.5%) viewed the government to be the main perpetrator.
